Grooming Your Chihuahua
Many Chihuahua owners overlook the grooming needs of their Chihuahua. Chihuahuas are the smallest dog breed, but they still require regular grooming to keep them looking healthy and clean. Contrary to popular belief, there are only two breeds of Chihuahuas; the long haired, and short haired ones. Other names such as applehead, deerhead, toy, and teacup are simply used by breeders to descripe characteristics of their Chihuahuas. The only breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club are the long haired and short. Long haired Chihuahuas require daily combing to keep their coat untangled, and clump-free. While they may have long hair, long haired Chihuahuas actually shed very little. This is because their hair is similar to human hair in the sense that it is very fine and soft. Short haired Chihuahuas should not need to be combed as much, however doing so may keep them from shedding hair in your house. Short haired Chihuahuas will actually shed more hair than the long haired Chihuahuas. Another part of your grooming routine should be giving your Chihuahua a bath. Chihuahuas will get dirty, be it from playing outside, or just getting dirt on them from being inside. Many people prefer to bath their Chihuahuas in the sink because they can get eye-level with them to wash them. Be gentle when you bath your Chihuahua, and be sure not to get any water or shampoo in your Chihuahuas eyes or ears. You will need to mark your calender for a time to take your Chihuahua to get professionally groomed. The groomers professionally trim your Chihuahuas hair, as well as other needed things.
