The Legacy of The Yorkie
Yorkies have became pretty popular over the past years. Actually, it is the second most popular dog breed in the U.S. Chances are, you probably know someone who owns one. Well, it's important that we not forget the legacy this spectacular dog breed has. The Yorkshire Terrier, also called "Yorkie" for short, originated in a mountainous region of Yorkshire, England in the 1800's. Yorkies were bred by the English farmers for the purpose of killing field mice and vermin. Yorkies were then brought over to the U.S. in the year 1872. Following their arrival, Yorkies became registered with the American Kennel Club making them a recognized dog breed. It wasn't long before the fad of having a Yorkie exploded with popularity in both England and America. Womens and children in particular liked this small dog breed, often carrying them around everywhere they go. Yorkies became the choice for many dog show competitors. Yorkies have a very unique, elegant coat of hair, often winning many tournaments. But not only is their physical appearence of high standards, they also have a high intelligence level. Yorkies can learn commands taught to them quicker than many other breeds. Yorkies have an interesting past that many people probably don't know about. We shouldn't forget how these dogs came to be. |
