The Up's and Down's of Owning a Chihuahua
It's a big decision when you say you wan't to own a dog, and Chihuahuas are no exception. They are small animals with huge personalities, and often require special attention and care. Here are the up's and down's of owning a Chihuahua. Owning a Chihuahua is a big commitment, because you are now responsible for another life. You need to be willing to spend part of your time taking care of your Chihuahua by feeding them, taking them out to potty, training them, and taking them to the vet when needed. It will cost time and monet, and if you arn't prepared to sacrifice either of those, you shouldn't get a Chihuahua. Chihuahuas are faced with many different health problems. Some serious and life threatening, such as neurological disorders, and some minor, such as tooth tarter. Chihuahuas have very tiny bones, which can break easily. These dogs are not a good choice for homes with small children. It's all too often Chihuahuas get injured from being stepped on. If you are looking for a dog with a lot of personality and loving affection, then the Chihuahua is the one for you. They enjoy being a lap dog, often choosing to be in their owners lap over any other place. However, they also enjoy having their time to play with their favorite toys, and run around outside. This makes them a good breed for homes, as long as they are still taken outside often. Chihuahuas are also a good alarm for anyone who lives by themselves. They have a keen sense of hearing and will often bark at anyone who comes to the door. However, you should keep them away from larger animals and dogs. Chihuahuas usually won't back down and would probably fight a lion if they had the chance. I'm sure you have probably heard that Chihuahuas can be hard to potty train, and most of them are, but it really depends on your specific dog and how well you train them. Chihuahuas respond well to positive reinforcement, so everytime your Chihuahua is good, give them a treat. If they are bad, you don't need to physically touch your Chihuahua, just say "No", or "Bad". If you are contemplating owning a Chihuahua, do so more research first. It's a big decision which shouldn't be taken lightly, but if you are willing to spend the time and money, it could be one of the best decisions of your life. I hope this will help you decide. |
